Recipes for a perfect wife5/24/2023 ![]() In addition to her novels, Brown's writing has appeared in publications such as Self, Redbook, Canadian Living, Today's Parent, and Chatelaine. Karma Brown is an award-winning Canadian journalist and bestselling author of the novels Come Away With Me, The Choices We Make, In This Moment, and The Life Lucy Knew. With great care and gravity, this book offers a satisfying look at the lies we tell to feed the secrets we keep. This mesmerizing dual narrative of a modern-day woman and a quintessential 1950s housewife is at once witty and charming and dark and sinister-much like its focus characters. ![]() When she discovers a vintage cookbook in her basement, the allure of cooking up Baked Alaska and Chicken a la King soon leads her into the darker story of the woman who previously owned the house, unfolding in notes tucked into the book.Īs Alice discovers striking parallels between this woman’s life and her own, she is finally forced to focus on the trajectory of her own life, questioning the foundation of her marriage and what it means to be a wife fighting for her place in a patriarchal society. ![]() After reluctantly leaving New York City for the suburbs, newlywed Alice struggles with shifting roles at home and achieving domestic bliss in a new fixer-upper. ![]() Reviews of demon copperhead5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Yet, rather than feeling for the characters’ wasted and brutalised lives, the reader is too busy focusing on Kingsolver’s virtuosic reworking of their models. This would be a grim melodrama if it weren’t for Demon’s endearing humor, an alloy formed by his unaffected innocence and weary cynicism. She writes in an afterword that she wants to counter ‘hillbilly stereotypes’ and draw attention to ‘the limited choices and suffocated hopes, poverty built into a region by historical design’. Demon Copperhead is entirely her own thrilling story, a fierce examination of contemporary poverty and drug addiction tucked away in the richest country on Earth. But her fidelity to Dickens’s plot is an increasing distraction. Only Uriah Heep (here U-Haul) and the Micawbers (the McCobbs) are poorly integrated into her scheme. The parallels proliferate Kingsolver even has Emmy living in ‘a geographic dome… like a boat turned upside down’, redolent of Mr Peggotty’s ‘black barge’. The idealism and concern with social justice that are characteristic of Kingsolver’s worldview find their natural counterpart in Dickens’s impassioned social criticism. Like David, Demon is reunited with Betsy, an elderly female relative (here his grandmother), and her disabled brother Dick (thankfully without King Charles’s head), before going to live with Coach Winfield and his daughter Agnes, whom he initially takes for a boy, and falling in love with the drug-addled Dori, who, like Dora Spenlow in the original, has a snappish dog named Jip. ![]() Jeremy thorpe by michael bloch5/24/2023 ![]() Michael Bloch was born in 1953 and trained for the law. Michael Bloch’s magisterial biography is not just a brilliant retelling of this amazing story ten years in the making, it is also the definitive character study of one of the most fascinating figures in post-war British politics. Jeremy was acquitted of involvement but his career was in ruins. Scott’s incessant boasts about their ‘affair’ became increasingly embarrassing, and eventually led to a bizarre murder plot to shut him up for good. But as his star steadily rose so his nemesis drew ever nearer: a time-bomb in the form of Norman Scott, a homosexual wastrel and sometime male model with whom Jeremy had formed an ill-advised relationship in the early 1960s. When he became leader of the Liberal Party in 1967 at the age of just thirty-seven, he seemed destined for truly great things. ![]() The story of Jeremy Thorpe’s rapid rise and spectacular fall from grace is one of the most remarkable in British politics. ‘A revealing, insightful and gripping biography of one of the most extraordinary people ever to lead a British political party’ Observer ![]() Nyxia book 35/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Nyxia grabs you from the first line and never lets go.
